Kazuya Furutani
A ceramic artist based in Shigaraki.
Born into the Furutani family, which has been involved in pottery for generations, Kazuya is the second generation to work as a ceramic artist. His father, Michio Furutani, was widely recognized as a master of anagama kiln firing. Kazuya has inherited his father’s techniques and dedication, while pursuing his own unique path in the craft.
The defining feature of Furutani's work lies in the beauty of the "diverse keshiki" he pursues and the "vividly colored firing effects" of his creations.
(Note: In the context of ceramics, keshiki refers not to landscapes in nature but to the textures, patterns, scorch marks, etc. that emerge during the firing process. These elements are regarded as highlights of the work.)
Shigaraki ware and Iga ware each have their own distinct histories and traditions. Shigaraki Town and Iga City, which share a border, also share similarities in the characteristics of their clay. As a result, Furutani creates works that reflect the unique characteristics of both styles.
