The characteristic of Etsuko Tange’s teaware is their dazzling, jewerly box like brilliance, incorporating vivid colors and gold.
Although it looks Western at first glance, the lid’s knob is inspired by traditional Japanese decorative fittings known as "kazarikanagu" (ornamental metalwork). Kazarikanagu is a general term for decorative metal fittings used in ancient Japanese castles, shrines, portable shrines, festival floats, and Japanese swords.
Originally drawn to the beauty of kazarikanagu through a fondness for visiting shrines and temples, she read books about kazarikanagu and observed the manufacturing process of kazarikanagu from skilled artisans, deepening her understanding of Kazarikanagu.
After completing a two-year training program at the Tokoname Ceramic Institute in 2013, she received guidance from teapot artists in Tokoname and thoroughly learned the basics of teapot making.
In order to create a larger tea strainer that is less likely to get clogged with tea leaves, she is particular about the difficult method of attaching the tea strainer from inside the teapot.
Etsuko Tange says “I hope people spend a gorgeous tea time by using my teaware.”
