Hikaru Shimamura

"I want to make a work that will shock the people."

The works created by Shimamura has the power to make eyes glued to his works at a glance.

The colors of many of his pieces are bright such as white, blue, and red, and although it may seem that they are glazed and contain pigments, they are all the colors of the unglazed clay itself.

Unlike general Bizen ware, he does not aim to get “well fired” and “yohen” caused by covered ash. He slowly fires his pieces in an anagama wood-fired kiln for about 8 days to express the original color of the soil.

He says the most fun part of making pottery is preparing the clay.

He does not sift the soil, but instead while kneading the clay with his fingertips, he checks the size of the stones and removes them according to the work to be made.

“Every time I come across a new clay, I start to imagine ‘I want to make that kind of piece’ and get motivated to create” he says.

Wherever I go, I look out for new clay, and that is no exception even during my dog's walk every day. There are three different walking courses, long, middle and short, and if I find new clay, I bring back enough to make one houhin and try it. If it turned out to be good clay, then I bring back a little more, and so on, there is no end to the quest for clay.

Born in Osafune City, Okayama Prefecture in 1942.

When he was 33, he decided to become a potter.

He decided to make “saikumono”, that is Japanese word for carvings and creating figurines, that had been passed down as a tradition of Bizen ware, but he was deeply concered that saikumono was not made much in Bizen at that time. He says he was particularly fond of saikumono from an early age, but he also hated imitation of others’ works.

Shimamura's unique works, which are not found anywhere else, capture people hearts and never let go.

In 2013, Shimamura was designated by Bizen City as a holder Intangible Cultural Property for "Bizen ware technique"

In 2019, he was designated by Okayama Prefecture as a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property.
