The surfaces that emerge as ash produced by the wood fire melts and fuses with Bizen clay are further defined by the contrast between hi-omote (side exposed to flame) and hi-ura (shielded side) created in the anagama kiln. In addition, a vividness of color that extends beyond the traditional framework of Bizen enhances these wood-firing elements.

Born in Ako, a town neighboring Bizen, Iwasato grew up in an environment closely connected to Bizen ware. After graduating from an art university, he trained under several Bizen potters, where he encountered the effects created when ash directly interacts with the clay, and became deeply drawn to yōhen (unpredictable wood-firing effects) produced through wood firing.

While studying characteristic Bizen firing effects such as goma and sangiri, he recognized parallels between these effects and the function of glaze, which led to a growing interest in color expression beyond conventional Bizen aesthetics. This awareness led him to pursue a deeper understanding of glaze, and he undertook formal study at the Kyoto Municipal Institute of Industrial Technology and Culture, known for its expertise in glaze research.

After returning to Bizen, he confronted the challenge of achieving his desired color expressions using Bizen clay. Through carefully examining the properties of the clay and exploring glaze formulations, he gradually expanded his expressive range.

In addition, during the approximately eight years between graduating from university and moving to Kyoto to study glaze, he trained under multiple Bizen artists and participated in more than 60 wood kiln firings, experiences that have become a crucial support in determining the quality of firing results.
“The methods and approaches to kiln firing differ greatly from one artist to another, and having been able to experience those differences firsthand has become the foundation of my current practice.”

Building on these accumulated experiences, he continues to explore a body of work that steps beyond conventional Bizen traditions.
