Noriyuki Furutani
A ceramic artist who lives in Shigaraki and specializes in Tenmoku.
His father was the Michio Furutani, known in Shigaraki as a master of the anagama kiln.
Tenmoku pieces are generally fired in gas or electric kilns. Furutani chooses to fire Tenmoku in a wood-fired kiln, even though it is said to be difficult to fire even in gas or electric kilns, where the firing environment is easy to control.
Noriyuki Furutani is probably the only ceramic artists in Japan who fires Tenmoku in a wood-fired kiln.
"Although it is different from the uniform and neat finish of electric kiln firing, there is a deep color, dignity, and profundity that comes from firing in an anagama kiln. One of the pleasures is the unintended and unexpected firing that is unique to wood-fired kilns. It has a mysterious presence that cannot be created by human power alone, and is born from the addition of the power of nature."
Also, among the works fired in electric kilns, the pink silver tenmoku (tenmoku with a metallic luster and pink color) is highly regarded as an original work by Noriyuki Furutani.
At the age of 18, he was captivated by Tenmoku pottery he saw in an art museum, and since then, he has continued to pursue the possibilities of Tenmoku pottery in his own way, continuing to evolve.
After graduating from junior college at the age of 21, he became an apprentice to the renowned master Takashi Nakazato in Karatsu, where he underwent seven years of rigorous training. Not only did he learn the techniques of the potter's wheel, but he also studied the philosophy of pottery and a way of life centered around it while living alongside the master. He now applying these lessons to his current creations.
