Tomohiro Sawada

Born into a family with a four-generation legacy in ceramics,

Tomohiro Sawada Sawada places great importance on form, approaching it with a refined and uncompromising aesthetic. While showing respect for the traditions of Tokoname, he seeks expression that goes beyond established forms.

His work focuses on ash glazes, commonly found in Ko-Tokoname—Tokoname ware produced from the late Heian to early Muromachi period (ca. 1100–1500 CE)—and connects the depth of these materials to contemporary expression.

His grandfather, Yoshiharu Sawada, was known as an authority on Tokoname ware, having made significant contributions to the study of Ko-Tokoname.

He served as an executive board member of the Japan Ceramic Society and was the founding director of the Tokoname Municipal Ceramic Research Institute (now Tokoname Ceramic Forest, Pottery Research Institute), playing a vital role in the advancement of ceramic culture.
