When you think of Banko ware, the first thing that comes to mind is shidei (purple clay) teapot.
And in this craft, Bigetsu Itoh is known for finishing purple clay with exceptional beauty.
With his meticulous craftsmanship and refined skill, he has continued to create teapots of exceptional quality, earning recognition in 1993 as an Intangible Cultural Property of Yokkaichi City.
His teapots are lustrous and silky-smooth to touch, thin and light, and fit comfortably in your hand, making them easy to use.
After shaping the clay on the potter’s wheel and drying it, he polishes the surface by wiping it with a cloth, then polishes it again after firing.
By devoting himself to these painstaking and tedious processes for each piece, the distinctive dignity of his teapots is born.
Because so much time is spent on every step, the number he can produce is inevitably limited.
Once you hold one, you can’t help but want to touch it.
And it’s exciting to imagine what kind of sheen and character it will reveal after years of use.
