Kazuo Toyomasu
In modern Arita and Imari ware, each step—clay work, wheel-throwing, painting, and firing—is usually done by different specialists. But Kazuo Toyomasu is a rare artist who handles the entire process on his own.
Instead of using the common electric or gas kilns, he fires his work in a traditional noborigama wood-fired kiln. Typically, Arita and Imari porcelain works are placed in protective containers called saya to shield them from ash and debris during firing. However, Toyomasu forgoes the use of saya, exposing the pieces directly. This can create color variations and distortions, but these imperfections add character and are part of what makes his pieces so special.
