Yuko Sugama
During her student years, Sugama encountered the works of Iga ware artist Yoh Tanimoto and was deeply moved by strength and beauty of his works. This experience inspired her to pursue the path of Iga ware.
While studying at Kyoto Traditional Crafts College, she came across an advertisement seeking an assistant for Tanimoto. The moment she saw it, she felt a sense of destiny, as if she was being called, and immediately applied. After graduation, she apprenticed under Tanimoto, training for 13 years.
During this time, she gained firsthand experience in Tanimoto's wood-firing process, assisting in the firing of anagama kiln held 5–6 times a year, and mastering the essence of wood-fired ceramics.
She is also deeply passionate about painting decoration, creating many porcelain pieces that showcase the painting techniques he acquired in Kyoto.
