Teruyuki Isobe
Teruyuki Isobe is a master craftsman of Tokoname teapots. He makes several styles of teapots, but his signature style is inka (i.e. a flower stamp in Japanese) stamp of which there are many fans.
The way of making this is very complicated; he first makes a teapot on a potter’s wheel, and then paints several lines on it. After drying it for a while, he adds a complex groove to the body with a tool that he developed, and after that, he lets it dry again and then stamps the flower pattern one by one by hand. There are about two hundred flower patterns for a small teapot, and about five hundred for the larger one. After stamping all the flower patterns, he dries the pot and bakes it at 750 degrees. Then he paints the whole pot with colored soil, and after drying it again, he uses a sponge to wipe the surface of the teapots. This way, the color is embodied inside the flower pattern. As you can see, this is very time consuming work that needs to go through several process and it is all done by hand.
“If the teapot is too thin, it will be torn easily when stamped. On the contrary, if it is too thick, the teapot will be hard to use. It is very difficult to make the teapot at the exactly correct thickness. To stamp on the curved surface is also a difficult job” Teruyuki said. The sophisticated design is eye-catching, but he is also particular about the teapot itself.
“Making the bottom curve part thinner compared to the other parts of the teapot will make the whole teapot balanced, making it more comfortable to handle for the user ” he says. This is a sheer persistence and a technique that can be achieved with a high level of skill.
After graduating junior high school, he chose to work since he didn’t like to study. He started to work at teapot manufacturing company, which his elementary school teacher’s acquaintance was working at. It was a major teapot manufacturing company, and also made hand-made ones. Teruyuki was consistently in charge of making hand-made teapots.
He worked at the company until his retirement at age 68. Many people told him to retire and become independent, but he stayed at the company until retirement because he really respected the president.
Other than inka style, he also makes other traditional style teapots that are beautiful and easy to use, and are receiving attention from many teapot collectors and tea lovers.
