Masayuki Uraguchi

Masayuki Uraguchi is a leading celadon ceramic artist in Japan.

Celadon is a pale translucent blue color created when trace amounts of iron in the glaze are converted to ferrous oxide (FeO) through reduction firing.

Just as seawater appears nearly transparent when scooped up but looks blue in deeper areas, and a clear sky appears blue, this deep blue-green color is achieved by repeatedly applying thick layers of the thin, translucent glaze.

It is also characterized by the fact that the color of celadon changes dramatically under the strong influence of surrounding light, such as weather, time of day, and type of lighting.

Born in Tokyo in 1964.

He was born and raised in Tokyo, but the seas and rivers of Tokyo during his childhood were very different from today, and were very dirty since it was the peak of the pollution problem. The beautiful blue sea he saw for the first time on a family trip to Nishi-izu became an unforgettable memory, and since then blue has been his favorite color.

Perhaps influenced by this, he decided to study celadon in his third year at Tokyo University of the Arts, and for the next four years until he graduated from the graduate school there he studied ceramics, with a focus on celadon.
