Yuichi Hirano

Yuichi HIrano

Yuichi Hirano is the fourth generation potter in Tokoname.

His works are all fired in an anagama wood fired kiln. As of 2023, he has been making pottery for over 60 years, but never used an electric or gas kiln for his final works.

He goes hiking in the mountains with a shovel and hoe to look for soil, which he still keeps doing even after reaching 80 years old.

The soil is dried without being sieved, and the stones are removed by hand.

A large noborigama wood-fired kiln with 10 chimneys in Tokoname, designated as a national important tangible folk cultural property of Japan in 1982, was built in 1885 and jointly owned by local people.  The representative of this kiln when it was constructed was Mr. Tozo Hirano, the great-grandfather of Yuichi Hirano.  It was actually used until 1974, and Hirano also used this noborigama kiln until he was 33 years old.  Subsequently, he constructed an anagama wood-fired kiln, in which all of his current works are fired.

In 2013, Yuichi Hirano's vase was purchased by the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and is now in its collection.
