Jozan Yamada the 4th
Born in Tokoname in Aichi Prefecture in 1954, Jozan Yamada is the 4th generation of the Jozan Yamada family which has been representing Tokoname Tea Ware since the 1880s.
His father, Jozan Yamada the 3rd who passed away in 2005, was designated by the Japanese government as a Living National Treasure. Like many traditional craftsmen in Japan, Jozan Yamada the 4th was never explicitly taught by his father, who was a great master, instead he learned everything by just observing his master.
Jozan the 4th thinks that the works are not only a tool to drink tea, but also a work of art to pursue beauty. At the same time, he attempts to make tea sets that not only have a beautiful appearance, but that have practical utility and are easy to use.
As Jozan Yamada the 3rd always said, “If you pursue the ease of use, it will become “beautiful”. Airplanes and cars are beautiful because they are built to be practically useful and as a result, naturally turned out to be beautiful. You could say the same thing with the tea ware”.
“He pointed out bad points of my work, even though he didn’t teach me anything, like “the handle is a little big”, etc. Since I’m his son, I sometimes thought he was annoying (laugh) but I now understand many things he wanted to tell me, and I respect him very much” comments Jozan Yamada the 4th. “Sometimes I told my father my opinion about his works. When I did, he didn’t say anything, but just listened to me.”
Nowadays Tokoname City has been developed and it is hard to get good soil. Fortunately his father had been hoarding large amounts of good quality soil, so they blend them with other soils and are able to continue making good quality tea ware. Jozan Yamada the 4th admitted that, “my father went anywhere to get soil whenever he heard about good soil in any place. So now we have several hundred years amount of soil.” Jozan Yamada the 4th makes not only tea sets but also tableware and vases, and all of them are very popular.
For Japanese cuisine, good quality food is always served with beautiful tableware. First class cooks and restaurants are always particular about good tableware. For example, among them, one very famous restaurant which represents Japan, liked the tableware made by Jozan Yamada the 4th a lot and ordered many of the tableware made by him. Jozan Yamada the 4th remarked, “I like making tableware because I love eating (laugh). Next to making tableware are vases.”
