Masafumi Ohnishi

Masafumi Ohnishi

Distinctive style of Masafumi Ohnishi pieces fired in nobori-gama wood-fired kiln portrays deep tone with bold cracks.

“I want to make pottery that are natural” says Ohnishi.

Because he only picks only big pebbles and does not sift the clay, the clay would not become uniform. When fired in the kiln, clay shrinks but pebbles do not shrink, as a result, the pieces have bold cracks expressing the strength of nature.

Ohinishi’s unique Tanba style noborigama wood-fired kiln is very long, narrow and the ceiling is extremely low, so that Onishi can only craw inside.  About one thousand pieces are fired in a kiln, and only a few (about 4 or 5 pieces) come out with ravishing red.  That is because he uses bamboo for firewood which is very rare even in the entire Japan.

Onishi never tried the same firing method in the last 10 years.  He constantly repeats trial and error, for example changes the clay, how to fire, the amount of firewood, the ratio of red pine and bamboo firewood, etc.  The pursue for his original Tanbaware will never end.

Masafumi Ohnishi was born in 1980 in a potter family already lasted for three generations.  Until his father’s generation, the family mainly made jars, sake barrel, miscellaneous pottery items.  Ohnishi himself was unconsciously thinking to succeed the family as pottery artisan.  However, he met ko-Tanba (old-Tanba) and became fascinated with it, as a result, he decided to be a pottery artist.
