Tomoyuki Ohiwa

Anagama wood-fired kiln of Tomonori Ohiwa
Anagama wood-fired kiln of Tomonori Ohiwa

Tomoyuki Ohiwa

A thick layer of ash that dynamically changes colors, and ash that drips like a ball.

These are the characteristics of Ohiwa's work, and are the result of his insatiable pursuit of "firing".

In Bizen, the pine ash attached on the surface of the work and becoming glass-like surface is called “goma”, but the white flowing goma is unique to Ohiwa.

In 2003, Ohiwa joined the Bizen Ceramic Art Center.

After that, he became an apprentice of Mr. Ryuichi Kakurezaki, a master of modern Bizen, for eight and a half years.

Bizen ware is a type of pottery that is carefully fired in a wood-fired kiln for about two weeks, to enjoy the firing effects.

In the kiln, the way the ash of the firewood falls on and the flame hits each piece makes every single piece firing effect one of a kind.

Many Bizen artists fire their wood-fired kiln only once or twice a year.

It would not be an exaggeration to say that all the works that will be sold for the next year are fired at that time.

If there is a mistake in firing the kiln, it can affect all the work in the kiln, so it is a huge task that wears out both physical strength and nerves.

Unlike gas kilns and electric kilns, which are relatively stable, wood fire kilns have a much higher chance that the pieces turn out to be failure.

Because of its difficulty, it is not easy to gain experience in wood-fired kilns.

Ohiwa says, “My apprenticeship is to gain more experience firing a wood-fired kiln.”

Firewood kilns can be broadly divided into noborigama kilns and anagama kilns.

What both kilns have in common is that both are long from front to back, and firewood is thrown in from the front and the heat is transferred to the back.

However, in noborigama kilns, there are multiple rooms and each room is connected by a small hole that makes it relatively easy to keep the temperature constant, and as a result it is relatively easy to have firing effect evenly.

On the other hand, in anagama kilns, the inside is not divided into one large tube like room, so the temperature inside the kiln varies depending on the location, and the firing effect tends to be uneven.

Ohiwa takes advantage of the characteristics of the anagama kiln, which is that it is difficult to maintain a constant flow of flame, and designs with calculations that allow for greater variation in firing effects.

Ohiwa also succeeded in expressing unevenness and various firing effects even in a single piece with ash thickly covered by using a large amount of firewood.
