Tomoyuki Matsui
In 1996, he was designated as an important intangible cultural property holder of Okayama prefecture.
It was the first time for a Bizen artist born outside of Okayama prefecture.
He was born in Kumamoto prefecture in 1931.
After studying for a year at the Kyoto Ceramics Research Institute at the age of 18, he studied under Kyoyaki artist Kakou Morino for about five years.
His works reflect an elegant Kyoto style studied in Kyoto.
Matsui blew a new wind into the long history of Bizenware by using new techniques such as “aisai bizen” that mixes pigments to clay to develop a blue color, "neriage" that creates layers of different clay colors, and "ginsai" that sprays silver on the surface,
Nowadays, it is not uncommon for Bizen artists to work on works that use pigments and glazes, but Matsui was the first to do that in Bizen.
In traditional Bizen-style works, because Matsui lavishly uses firewood, his works are covered by thick ashes to express deep and rich color that are truly overwhelming.
