Hiromi Yamamoto
Crafted from Yokkaichi clay aged for over 30 years, and fired twice – or even thrice –Hiromi Yamamoto’s exquisite teapots are truly a labor of love. Each firing cycle lasts over 70 hours, meaning that each work spends between 140 and 200 hours in the kiln. But the time is worth it: Each time a pot enters the kiln, its surface becomes more intriguing to behold, taking on qualities that only come from long exposure to a wood flame.
Yamamoto lets pieces rest for three to four months between firing cycles, meaning each teapot takes between eight and 14 months to go from clay on the potter’s wheel to a finished product. What is more, while ash from the wood burned in the kiln adds visual interest to a piece’s surface when it adheres during firing, that same ash can also cement a pot’s lid to its body. For every successful pot, several others have to be tossed out, Yamamoto says.
But he is willing to put in the effort and take on the risk to imbue the pieces “with their power as pieces of ceramics,” he says.
Yamamoto was born in 1941 in Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture – home to an illustrious pottery tradition – to a family of ceramics artisans. The sixth of nine siblings, he faced little pressure to take over the family business, and worked an office job for some time after graduating from a technical high school. But at the age of 23, he felt the pull of pottery, and joined the field.
Teapots apparently seemed like the natural genre to pursue: Yamamoto had grown up watching his father make them. But he was adamant that his would be “works of ceramics art, not mere dishes.”
Yet these pieces’ prices do not necessarily reflect the tremendous effort that has gone into them. “People often remark that business must be tough – but that’s because I’m doing what I love. If I can produce something of quality, and have the user enjoy it, that’s enough to move me.”
