Kengo Saeki
Most pieces of Shigaraki--yaki, one of Japan’s oldest styles of pottery, spend three or four days in the kiln during firing. Kengo Saeki’s pieces are fired for a lengthy 10 days. “Putting in more time and expending a lot of wood” is the key to a sumptuous finish, the artist says.
Vivid orange and patches ash-flecked white create a rich surface, which is occasionally enlivened by streaks of patina resembling burn marks. Saeki creates both rustic hand-coiled pieces and works pieced together from thin-rolled sheets of clay for a more geometric silhouette.
Saeki also counts pieces in the oribe style among his specialties. Fired in a gas kiln, these works feature a distinctive spring-green finish..
Saeki was born in Kyoto in 1969 to Takeharu Saeki, a renowned maker of traditional Japanese clothing. While studying three-dimensional modeling at Kyoto Seika University, he became particularly enamored of ceramics. He then resolved to learn how to work a wood-fired kiln, believing it to be the wellspring of the art. At 26, Saeki apprenticed himself to Kiyotsugu Sawa, the doyen of shigaraki-yaki. During his eight years as an apprentice, Saeki went through the firing process some 80 times, amassing a deep knowledge of the possibilities a wood-fired kiln enables.
