Yoshiki Murata

Yoshiki Murata

Yoshiki Murata

Yoshiki Murata is known for his distinctive “hammered” and “carved” ceramic teapots. Works in the “hammered” style are created by striking the surface of the unfinished piece to create small, subtle indentations, and have an appearance and texture much like that of hammered brass or copper. “Carved” works are formed when numerous miniscule cuts are made in the work’s surface, creating a piece that resembles carved wood through a long, involved process. Murata’s works have also been noted for the beautiful patina they take on when fired.

Until his children were grown, most of Murata’s works were “normal” – standard ceramics with a generalized appeal. Recently, however, he has been applying the fine-tuned technical skills he developed during his early career to projects with a great deal of individual personality – teapots and water bowls with legs attached, or with bottoms that are so dramatically rounded as to be unstable.

“If you only make ‘normal’ objects, nobody will be able to distinguish them from the work of others – not even you! They won’t stand out to anyone. If you focus only on making what’s ‘practical’ or ‘functional,’ then you limit the range of what you can create. Even if other works I see are so new and interesting that they make me jump in surprise, I try to think, ‘what if I made something a little different?’ and create from that image. I always want to be a half-step ahead of my customers.”

Murata entered into a ceramics apprenticeship at age 15 – “I did it because (during middle school) someone told me I didn’t have the grades to get into high school,” he laughs. Reasoning that he may as well do work that he enjoyed, Murata chose ceramics, a field in which he had some experience, and which he thought might allow him to travel around Japan in the future.

After studying under his master and saving his meager wages for eight years, Murata set out on his own, with the goal of making Japanese-style teapots for use with sencha, a type of top-grade Japanese green tea. “At the time,” he says, “the only person making teapots for sencha was Jozan Yamada. I thought that someone had to make different teapots than he did!”

Almost immediately after he began working independently, Murata held his first solo exhibition in Japan’s tea capital of Uji, Kyoto Prefecture, and launched himself wholeheartedly into the production of high-end tea utensils. Though his teapots have won him acclaim as a leading master of Tokoname-style ceramics, Murata refuses to be bound by any one label, and strives constantly to create inventive works of art that the world has never seen.
